Better Living for Seniors

BLS has numerous opportunities for smaller group interaction with its committees.  Members are encouraged to "shop around" and find the best fit for your time and talents.  The following committees are part of BLS:

  • Senior Resource
  • Professional Development (one subcommittee: Professionals in Transition)
  • Membership
  • Communications
  • Falls Prevention
  • Elder Advocacy (two subcommittees: Mental Health & LGBT Elder Initiative)
  • FUNdraising Committee

Please scroll down to read about all of the committees.

The Senior Resource Committee works to actively promote The Helpline and its resources to caregivers, elders and aging network professionals. There are two ways you can help us do that. The first way is to encourage eligible companies to register with The Helpline through the online guide so they can be used as referrals for callers who need their service. The second way is to sponsor refrigerator magnets that will feature not only your company name, but The Helpline number in bold font. These magnets are affordable, will be processed in quantities of 1,000 and handed out at health fairs, marketing visits, networking events, etc. Please call Cheri McKee at 727-683-1422 to order magnets today.  To register your business for The Helpline follow this link:

As a special project, The Senior Resource Committee assists with The Elves for Elders Program. The purpose of Elves is to provide gifts for those who might otherwise be forgotten during the holidays. Elves connect gift givers with seniors who are less fortunate wards of the court or case managed. Trees are placed in local retail and business offices with tags on them for each senior. Members of the community are able to take a tag and fill a bag with the desires of the elder. Senior Resource Committee members are asked to assist with placing a tree in a specified location, identifying additional locations, working with the locations’ staff to retrieve filled bags and to help sort and complete the bags prior to pick up by the guardians/case workers.

The Senior Resource Committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of every other month (even months) at the AAA, usually at 3:00p.m.

See Monthly Calendar for meeting date/time.

The BLS Professional Development (PRO DEV) Committee supports Educational events that provide growth and development opportunities to BLS members, students and the general public.  Monies raised from these events support a scholarship fund for nursing students at St Pete College and BLS initiatives.  We host the May BLS Consortium and it is  held each year at Mease Manor in Dunedin.  When not working on fund raising our newest goal is to network among ourselves to better understand how we each interact in our careers with seniors and what makes a good referral for each other.  We will continue to evolve as new members join this committee.  Visitors and those new to BLS are invited to attend our meetings to see if we are a good fit.  We are in search of members with enthusiasm, new ideas and those who want to contribute and get involved.

We meet the 4th Tuesday of every month at Empath Health, The Garden House, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater from 9:00 am – 10:00 (check the monthly calendar for any changes)

The Falls Prevention Coalition (Committee) is part of The Falls Free Coalition, organized by the National Council  on Aging’s Center for Healthy Aging.  This is a collection of national organizations and state coalitions working to reduce the growing number of falls and fall-related injuries among older adults.

Our committee attempts to address the four fall risk factors identified by the National Council on Aging:

 1.   Physical Mobility – We promote and participate in "A Matter of Balance" with presentations and educational materials provided by members.  We offer free health screenings to identify multiple causes of balance issues, and promote other exercise programs like Tai Chi.

MMMedications Management – We offer free individual and panel presentations at multiple venues throughout the community, providing access to medical professionals and service providers.

Ho  Home Safety – We educate the public on safe homes and disseminate the Falls Free brochures, offering free in-home assessments by professionals and service providers.

Env Environmental Safety – We seek members who can affect change in our community regarding public safety and include them in community events.

Additionally, we further educate and empower seniors through our Senior Advisory Council.  Here, we invite their participation through shared concerns and suggestions for educating their peers.

Our intergenerational Senior Cell Phone Safety Project brings cell phones (donated, collected and cleaned by students) to seniors who live alone, and have no cell phone or medical alert device. This project supports the Area Agency on Aging's Senior Victim Advocate Safety Cell Phone Project.

Our committee meets at 2:30pm on the 4th Tuesday of every month at at the Sunshine Senior Center at 330 5th St North, St Petersburg, Fl. 33701

This new committee will plan and implement fundraising events involving BLS members and Partners and bring more awareness to the vital role that BLS and the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas play in the community.

We are interested in involving community organizations and businesses in our efforts for seniors, encouraging them to join BLS and participate in our events.  The more we inform others and enable them to learn about our activities and services, the greater we enhance the lives of the population we serve.

If you are interested in having FUN while working for a stupendous cause, join the FUNdraising- "Moneymakers".  We are off to a roaring start with vibrant participants, enthusiasm and ideas.  We have already identified two events for 2017 and now the planning begins!

Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesdays of every month at noon at Home Care Assistance, 1530 N. McMullen Booth Rd., D12, Clearwater, FL  33759.  See monthly calendar for specific meeting date/times.
